For the eighth exciting year we are proud to present Emerge, our annual exhibition featuring works from student photographers enrolled in Arizona high schools, community colleges, art schools, and universities across the state. Ashley Czajkowski, a local photography-based artist and educator, juried this year’s show.
In this exhibition we offer student photographers an opportunity to show their work in a professional gallery, fulfilling our mission to support early-career photographers. In addition to the exhibition, prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, sponsored by Through Each Other’s Eyes; Best of Post-High School, sponsored by Charlene Stant Engel; and Best of High School, sponsored by Kelly and Dennis Collins.
About the Juror
Ashley Czajkowski, a photography-based artist, works in a number of interdisciplinary methods. Driven by personal experience, her research explores social constructions related to femininity, mortality and the psychological manifestation of the human-animal. Though she considers herself a photographer, Czajkowski also works in video, installation, and alternative print processes, pushing the expected boundaries of the photographic art medium.
Juror’s Statement
One of the most valuable rewards of studying photography is that it enables us to literally, and metaphorically, see the world around us in entirely new ways. In jurying this show, I was struck by the unique visions of these young photographers and artists. Whether this way of seeing revealed quiet moments of light and shadow or elaborately constructed scenes for the camera, the ability to use photography as a tool for exploration and creative expression was continuous throughout.
Though I did not set out to curate a show with a particular theme, a common thread began to reveal itself. Of the photographs I selected, there are many images of humans, of nature, and most curiously, of the boundaries where these two entities meet, overlap and coexist. I found myself responding to images that in some way question our current conditions of being: questions of human nature, our impact on our surroundings, our interactions with each other, and our understanding of ourselves. Almost like archaeologists of our own time, for me these photographs collectively evoke ideas related to the fragility of existence and a sense of wonder in the everyday.

Art Intersection presents Light Sensitive, an annual juried exhibition of images created using traditional and alternative photographic processes. Past work has included analog c-prints, platinum/palladium, cyanotype, gelatin silver, gum bichromate, wet plate collodion tintypes and ambrotypes, chemigrams, and other printing processes. Both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional work may be submitted.
Art Intersection staff will select up to three artists from Light Sensitive to show additional work during the (re)View exhibition in 2018.

About the Juror
scott b. davis is an artist and founder of the Medium Festival of Photography. His photographs are created with wooden view cameras ranging in size from 8” x 10” to 16” x 20”. His photographs explore the Sonoran desert and ordinary urban spaces in the American landscape. davis’s photographic prints are made by hand using the exquisite 19th century process of platinum printing.
His work has been reviewed in the New York Times, the Village Voice, the New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, and other print media. davis’s photographs have been collected by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Pier 24 in San Francisco, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Museum of Photographic Arts, and others.
Art Intersection presents the seventh annual Emerge exhibition with works from student photographers enrolled in Arizona high schools, community colleges, art schools, and universities across the state. As part of our mission to support emerging artists, we offer student photographers an opportunity to show their work in the North and South Galleries at Art Intersection. In addition to the exhibition, prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, sponsored by Through Each Others Eyes, Best of Post-High School, sponsored by Tempe Camera and Best of High School, sponsored by local patrons Kelly and Dennis Collins. INFOCUS, the Photography Support Group of the Phoenix Art Museum, will award a Student Membership to each of the three winners.
About the Juror
Clare Benson is a photographer and interdisciplinary artist from the United States. Her work has been exhibited and screened throughout the US and internationally. In 2014/2015, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research in northern Sweden at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics. Other recent awards include the Magenta Foundation Flash Forward, PDN Emerging Photographer, and the Joyce Elaine Grant Solo Show Award.
Benson earned her MFA at University of Arizona in Tucson, and her BFA at Central Michigan University.
Juror’s Statement
I can vividly remember the first photograph I made as a student. Armed with a pinhole camera that I had painted and taped and pin-pricked, I went outside, behind the art building, where sculpture students had their foundry and kilns and scrap materials. There was a plain wooden classroom chair, weathered from rain and sun, that I dragged to the center of the asphalt floor, imagining that it might speak as a symbol of absence and isolation, in the midst of this surreal industrial-looking space. I kneeled to the ground, pulling the piece of electrical tape that covered the aperture of my shoe box camera. I stared into this seemingly simple scene, hoping to absorb the moment in the same way that I understood the camera might. Light and darkness danced through a tiny window and onto the back wall of that miniature room. In the developing tray, I watched an image slowly appear, like a backward-fading memory, or something from a dream. The midday sky was black as night. The shadow of the chair glowed like the sun through thin overcast clouds. The entire space stretched out its long arms, pulling toward the sides of the page, blurring at the very ends, from the frayed edges of aluminum foil. Even when converted to a positive image, the world in this photograph looked nothing like the world that I had seen, but everything like the one that I had felt.
As photographers, and especially as photography students, we are constantly learning to re-see the world, using different techniques, processes, perspectives, and formats. In jurying this exhibition, I searched for moments of surprise and newness, which I remember so well from my years of studying photography. I looked at these images as stripped down fragments—concept, craft, and exploration—all existing on separate planes. Each is developed through learning and practice; sometimes all together, and sometimes in different stages. Some works display elements of all three, while some push farther into one than another, but all of them speak to processes of discovery, and the development of one’s voice as an image-maker.
I am impressed with the caliber and boldness of work by all of the Arizona students who submitted images for this exhibition, and I am grateful for the opportunity to see the world through so many different lenses; grateful to be reminded of the time, long ago, that my own world became animated with new life inside a light-tight shoe box.

About the Juror
Ann M. Jastrab is currently the gallery director at RayKo Photo Center located in the SOMA arts district in San Francisco near SFMOMA and the Yerba Buena Arts Center. RayKo is a comprehensive photographic facility with rental darkrooms, digital labs, studio and galleries that has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area for over 20 years. RayKo Gallery serves to advance public appreciation of photography and create opportunities for regional, national and international artists to create and present their work. RayKo Gallery offers over 1600 square feet of exhibition space and presents eight to ten exhibitions yearly with many nationally recognized artists; there is also a section of the gallery called The Marketplace that is reserved for Bay Area artists and displays a wide variety of photographic work. RayKo also has a thriving artist-in-residence program.
Besides being a curator, Ann Jastrab, with an MFA degree, is a fine art photographer, master printer, and teacher as well. Ann has curated many exhibitions for RayKo as well as juried exhibitions for the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Artspan, SFAI, the Center for Fine Art Photography, and other national and international venues outside of San Francisco. She has reviewed portfolios at the Seoul International Photography Festival in Korea, FotoFest, Photolucida, GuatePhoto, Review Santa Fe, Review LA, PhotoAlliance (Our World), SPE, Medium, Palm Springs Photo Festival, Filter, Lishui International Photography Festival in China, and Click646 as well as being a juror for Critical Mass. She has also been teaching courses at the Maine Media Workshops (formerly the Maine Photographic Workshops) in Rockport, Maine since 1994.
Ann is always looking for new artists for the gallery, both for solo shows and group shows. She is most interested in seeing documentary projects, fine art photography, alternative processes/historical process work, and also work made with traditional film cameras as well as plastic and pinhole cameras. Ann is not interested in seeing work that is obviously digitally manipulated. Ann can offer exhibition opportunities as well as resident artist possibilities.

Art Intersection presents the sixth annual Emerge student photography exhibition with works by photographers enrolled in Arizona high schools, community colleges, art schools, and universities. This year’s submissions to Emerge were juried by photographer William LeGoullon.
As part of our mission to support emerging artists, we offer student artists an opportunity to show their work in the North and South Galleries at Art Intersection. Art Intersection staff will also select recipients for Best of High School, Best of Post-High School, and Best of Show.
About the Juror William LeGoullon is an artist raised and currently based in Phoenix, Arizona. Since receiving his BFA from Arizona State University in 2009, he has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally including exhibitions in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Fort Collins, Santa Barbara, Seattle and Belgrade Serbia. In 2011, LeGoullon was awarded a Contemporary Forum Emerging Artist Grant from The Phoenix Art Museum and exhibited in The Arizona Biennial at The Tucson Museum of Art.
More recently he was recognized as a Klompching Gallery FRESH 2015 Finalist and took part in this years Photo Tapas by showcasing a solo exhibition at Modified Arts Gallery. In addition to exhibiting his own works, LeGoullon also explores independent curatorial work and teaches at Phoenix College. He plans to continue living and working in central Arizona.

About the Juror
Susan Burnstine is an award winning fine art and commercial photographer originally from Chicago now based in Los Angeles. Susan is represented in galleries across the world, widely published throughout the globe, teaches workshops internationally and has also written for several photography magazines, including a monthly column for Black and White Photography Magazine (UK).
Each year Art Intersection invites artists to submit work for consideration in Light Sensitive, a national juried exhibition of analog photography. This annual exhibition celebrates the traditional methods of making images in the darkroom. Past work has included c-prints, platinum, cyanotype, gelatin silver, gum bichromate, wet plate collodion tintypes, and other printing processes. While the final print must be made using analog techniques the use of computer generated digital negatives/positives in the creation of the print is acceptable.
In our May exhibition Art Intersection presents the work of emerging student talent ranging from high school to graduate students. We are dedicated to supporting students in their educational pursuits of self-expression through photography and congratulate each student for their unique vision and dedication to their craft. Through a jury process Art Intersection selects a variety of work from the photography students at high school, college, and university educational institutions across Arizona.
Art Intersection celebrates all forms of visual art with this juried exhibition from Arizona artists. Artists submit images of their work ranging from sculpture, photography, painting, ceramics, mixed media, artist books, and more in this juried exhibition juried by the Art Intersection curatorial staff.
No Strangers – The Art Intersection Creative Community embraces the diversity of Art Intersection alliances. This eclectic exhibition combines work from Art Intersection members and collaborating artists. This exhibition celebrates a very special part of our growing community, our members, staff, and faculty.
Exhibit your work by sharing your portfolio and view the work of other members in the Art Intersection members’ portfolio sharing event. Each member has a table space about 3′ x 6′ to show their work. Viewing is open to the public.
