Top Hand – The Working Cowboy, Photographs By Scott Baxter

Scott Baxter’s Top Hand project, the sequel to his 100 Years 100 Ranchers series, documents working hands, men and women alike, on ranches across several states in the American West. Shot with black-and-white, 4×5 and 8×10 film, and hand-printed using the palladium process, the photographs feature cowboys between the ages of 15 and 67 in their element — on horseback, in barn doorways and on the range — and serve to preserve a vanishing way of life. “To me, cowboys represent the way people should live their lives, the way people should raise their kids and the way people should behave,” Baxter says. “I continue to learn a lot every time I work with them.”

This collection of 30-35 images is the culmination of four years of work for Baxter, who continues to travel across the country in search of top hands and their stories.
