Luster: a solo exhbition by Mary Meyer
Luster, featuring new work by Arizona artist Mary Meyer, will be open in the Jewel Gallery alongside the 10×10 Exhibition & Sale. The Luster series is an ongoing body of work that features an evolution of cast aluminum forms originally hand sculpted in clay.
The series is inspired by our physical and spiritual connection to the natural world. Each aluminum form is unique, and has it’s own unique pattern that is repeated within the corresponding niche of the panel that houses it. The panels are comprised of layered wood that is hand carved, rubbed with graphite, and sealed. Each individual aluminum figure is suspended by a sewing needle; a symbol of the repetitious activity that is so integral to my art. The carvings/castings speak of life, growth, and the ubiquitous shapes, patterns, and symmetries that connect all living things.
Our environment continually becomes smaller, louder, less physical. But, we all come from a quiet place of origin; a seed, an egg, a womb. A simple place with no distractions that holds an internalized energy. My goal with this exhibition is to create a place of quiet radiance. A meditative space designed to evoke an atmosphere of stillness, reflection, and recognition.
