SUMMARY:With These Hands by Ken Light in Gallery 4
DESCRIPTION:Ken Light\, a documentary photographer and professor at the University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism\, authored the book With These Hands\, about migrant labor in the United States.  \nFrom a recent Washington Post Article by Ken Light \nRecent headlines about the widespread exploitation of children in America’s workplaces shocked me\, as it did many in our country. It was all the worse that the exploitation targeted undocumented migrant children who had recently entered the United States\, seemingly abetted by a Health and Human Services Department determined to clear unaccompanied children from detention. \nA lost childhood is something that can never be regained\, children who work in these oppressive conditions need witnesses and ones who are willing to fight on their behalf.

SUMMARY:Picturing Resistance In Gallery 4
DESCRIPTION:Picturing Resistance presents images from marches\, protests\, rallies\, and demonstrations\, showing people\, in the public view\, voicing their passion for change. Public protests embody dissent and express  the urgency for policy change. While voting can directly influence decisions and policy making\, the power of protests can shift voting behaviors in marginal voters\, and empower disengaged voters \nOur juror\, Ken Light\, photographer\, author\, and a Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism at the University of California\, Berkeley\, selected these works from online submitted images. \nMelanie Light and Ken Light’s book\, Picturing Resistance\, serves as the inspiration for this juried exhibition\, and a must own book for anyone interested in social justice movements in the past seven decades.  \nAbout the Juror\nKen Light\, a freelance documentary photographer for over fifty years\, focuses on social issues facing America. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, his work has been published in twelve books\, in magazines\, exhibitions and numerous anthologies\, exhibition catalogues and a variety of media\, digital and motion picture. \nHis most recent book Course of the Empire\, published by Steidl\, portrays a decade of mounting tension in a polarized America\, from Wall Street to the rural heartland and is a portrait of the American social landscape and is a riveting historical and visual record of a complicated country in a complicated time. \nWith These Hands\nGallery 4 presents an exhibition of work by Ken Light selected from his book With These Hands integrated in Gallery 4 with Picturing Resistance. The images in With These Hands present a vision of migrant child labor in agriculture. \nBanner images by Jessica Chen\, Stephen H Bean\, Kathrine Briccetti \n  \n \n Terry Barzcak"Please Stop"\nPigment Inkjet Print\n2020 \n Terry BarzcakMilesha\nPigment Inkjet Print\n2021 \n Terry Barzcak"I Can't Breathe"\nPigment Inkjet Print\n2020 \n Terry BarzcakSay Their Names Cemetery (George Floyd Square)\nPigment Inkjet Print\n2021 \n Stephen H. SUMMARY:Street Photography - Capturing the Unexpected
DESCRIPTION:In the cool fall temperatures\, Art Intersection presents a street photography workshop taught by photographer Neil A. Miller. Each class session will be held in person and students must capture photographs in public places. \nAs Wikipedia describes it\, “street photography is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places”. \nThis is a good basic definition but in reality there are many aspects of this approach to photography that need to be studied to fully understand and appreciate the complex issues involved while photographing on the street. This experience should offer a better understanding of street photography and give encouragement to find a vision of your own. \nThis workshop comprises three sessions:\n1- Neil discusses the range of possibilities and methods used in street photography along with its history\, the many concerns\, and personal responsibility. We will end this session with assignments to be photographed over the following two-week period in between session one and two.\n2- Photo assignments will be reviewed with the group in session two. The critique and editing suggestions will offer guidance to complete the project.\n3- During session three students will present their final edited Photographs to the group and discuss their street photography experience..  \nNeil A. Miller\, an American photographer\, captures the many fleeting aspects of the world around us. Neil’s first photographic work on the street was in Cleveland\, Ohio during the early 1960’s. It was a challenge to go from pictorial/portrait type photography to candid street photography. Working with a Rolleiflex 3.5f and a Leica M2 the results created a passion in him that has continued to this day. \nIn the 1970’s he spent time with Garry Winogrand and W. Eugene Smith while assisting at the Ansel Adams and Friends of Photography Workshops. His background includes time as a US Navy Photographer\, a 15 year teaching career along with a 39 year career as a news photographer for Channel 10 in Phoenix. Since retiring\, Neil continues his devotion to the photographic arts and most specifically to photographing on the street. \n\n\n \n \n Workshop\n Please complete this workshop sign up form before payment!
