SUMMARY:Midnight La Frontera - Images by Ken Light
DESCRIPTION:Between 1983 and 1987 along the California/Mexico border\, Ken Light took his Hasselblad camera and flash and rode along with US Border Patrol agents in the middle of the night as they combed the Otay Mesa looking for “illegal aliens.” He was there when they were apprehended – captured by authorities as well as the photographer’s flash. The black and white images are stark\, impromptu mug shots in the desert\, taken at a moment of extreme vulnerability\, when hope gave way to despair\, migrants caught in a cruel game of hide and seek. \nIn piercing words and in strobe lit images caught against the dark of night\, Midnight La Frontera’s immediacy underscores the struggle and defiance of those who make the perilous hike for days and weeks in search of the American Dream. \nKen Light\, a freelance documentary photographer for over fifty years\, and a Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism at the University of California\, Berkeley\, focuses on social issues facing America. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, his work has been published in twelve books\, in magazines\, exhibitions and numerous anthologies\, exhibition catalogues and a variety of media\, digital and motion picture. \nLearn more about Ken Light at his website\, click here. \n\n© Ken Light \n  \n© Ken Light \n  \n© Ken Light \n  \n© Ken Light

SUMMARY:Picturing Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Picturing Resistance presents images from marches\, protests\, rallies\, and demonstrations\, showing people\, in the public view\, voicing their passion for change.  \nOur juror\, Ken Light\, photographer\, author\, and a Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism at the University of California\, Berkeley\, will select from submitted images. \nMelanie Light and Ken Light’s book\, Picturing Resistance\, serves as the inspiration for this juried exhibition\, and a must own book for anyone interested in social justice movements in the past seven decades.  \nIn Ryan gallery Ken Light’s images from his book Midnight La Frontera will be shown during the Picturing Resistance exhibition.  \nOpening Reception\nDuring the opening reception author and performer Ada McCartney will deliver a spoken word and musical performance in the spirit of raising our voices for change. Her voice and music will heighten the visual impact of photography in the galleries to the next level. \nVideo Walk Through the Gallery\nHere’s a quick walk through the gallery with excerpts from Ada McCartney’s performance at the opening reception. You can see a closer look at the photographs in the gallery below. \n \nAbout the Juror\nKen Light\, a freelance documentary photographer for over fifty years\, focuses on social issues facing America. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, his work has been published in twelve books\, in magazines\, exhibitions and numerous anthologies\, exhibition catalogues and a variety of media\, digital and motion picture. \nHis most recent book Course of the Empire\, published by Steidl\, portrays a decade of mounting tension in a polarized America\, from Wall Street to the rural heartland and is a portrait of the American social landscape and is a riveting historical and visual record of a complicated country in a complicated time. \nMidnight La Frontera (TBW Books) illustrates\, in piercing words and in strobe lit images caught against the dark of night\, the struggle and defiance of those who make the perilous hike for days and weeks in search of the American Dream. \nBanner images by Harvey Castro\, Elaine Kessler\, and Bruce Charles \n\n  \n \n Jeffrey Allen\nExisto Porquo Resist\nC-Print - \n2020 \n Jeffrey Allen\nTearing It Down\nC-Print - \n2020 \n Stan Banos\nTrump Baby\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Stan Banos\nN/N/N\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Stan Banos\n7X\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Harvey Castro\n850 Bryant\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Harvey Castro\nChurch\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Harvey Castro\nJacqueline Azah on Broadway\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Harvey Castro\nCaptain Kap\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Vera Chang\nFarmworkers say #MeToo on Park Ave (New York\, NY)\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2018 \n Vera Chang\nFreedom (Columbus\, OH)\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2019 \n Vera Chang\nTake Off the Tape (New York\, NY)\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2018 \n Bruce Charles\nProtesters\, Phoenix\, AZ\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2017 \n Yu-Chen Chiu\nAmerica Seen: Black Lives Matter Protest\, Brooklyn\, New York (Edition 1 of 6) Pigment Inkjet Print - \n2020 \n Yu-Chen Chiu\nAmerica Seen: Anti-Racism Rally\, New York\, New York (Edition 1 of 6)\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2021 \n Yu-Chen Chiu\nAmerica Seen: Women’s March\, New York\, New York (Edition 1 of 6) \nPigment Inkjet Print = \n2017 \n Yu-Chen Chiu\nAmerica Seen: Women’s March\, New York\, New York (Edition 1 of 6) \nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2017 - \n James Cowlin\nKilled in Vietnam\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n1969 \n Chel Delaney\n“I AM HATED” documents his encounter with San Antonio Police\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2021 \n Chel Delaney\nPrayers for 53 who died in heat of semi-trailer at site where they were found\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2022 \n Chel Delaney\nConverse shoes were the only way to identify 10-year-old shot at Uvalde school\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2022 \n Chel Delaney\nRally against Trump administration’s separation of children and parents at border\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2018 \n Christine Federici\nWomen’s March January 21\, 2017\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2017 \n Christine Federici\nWomen’s March January 21\, 2017\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2017 \n Peter Fredlake\nThe All of It\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2013 \n Denis Gillingwater\nProbe_4283\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2021 \n Denis Gillingwater\nProbe_6651\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2021 \n Michael Hyatt\nPeace March – Ventura\, CA\nGelatin Silver Print - \n1969 \n Michael Hyatt\nSB 1070 Protest – Tucson\, AZ\nPigment Inkjet Print - \n2010 \n Jon Jeffery\nRed4Ed Rally at the AZ State Capitol\, 5/1/18\nPigment Inkjet Print on Wood - \n2018 \n Jon Jeffery\nRed4Ed March to AZ Capitol\, 4/30/18\nPigment Inkjet Print on Wood - \n2018 \n Leonard A.
