SUMMARY:Over\, Under\, and Inside by Ryuijie
DESCRIPTION:Art Intersection presents three collections of work by internationally known and collected photographer Ryuijie. Ryuijie\, whose platinum work can be found in Ryan Gallery\, shows us the versatility of his creativity with selections from his Color Ice Forms\, Underwater\, and P2 bodies of work. \nOn the artist reception weekend Ryuijie will teach a platinum/palladium printing workshop where participants can create platinum/palladium prints of their own images.  \nColor Ice Forms\n“Ten years ago I began working on a body of photographs I call Ice Forms. The subject matter\, botanicals frozen in blocks of ice\, photographed in color\, provides an element of the unexpected and unpredictable. This element can be likened to the Japanese principle of wabi sabi—beauty in nature in all its imperfections.” \nCIF 7 \nUnderwater\n“Underwater features a new sellection of marine photographs. These photgraphs are taken using a wide panoramic camera. Unlike Kanchi the photographs are captured digitally and printed digitally.” \nUW 25 \nP2\n“The P Square photographs began as a way of keeping my traditional photography alive. My life in photography began with the landscape. These are small platinum prints\, each holding a wealth of details and subtle tones\, allowing for intimate\, close-up viewing. These are all taken using film cameras. The film is later scanned and digital negatives are made for platinum printing.” \nP2 237 \nBiography\nMy earliest photographs were done in silver gelatin. In 1990 I expanded the darkroom to include the platinum palladium process. Most of my work is still done using traditional photographic methods\, but recently I have been incorporating digital imaging techniques into my box of tools. All the negatives for platinum printing are now done digitally. I use digital capture and printing for the new Color Ice Forms. \nMany years ago I was asked what I would do if film was no longer available. My answer was I would continue to work with whatever tools were available. To give up my art would be unthinkable and would probably be my undoing!

SUMMARY:Photogravure 2-Day Workshop with Karen Hymer
DESCRIPTION:Photogravure\nIn this two-day workshop students will learn the art of photopolymer gravure printing. Using light-sensitive steel-backed Solarplates\, participants will create 4″ x 5″ and 6″ x 8″ gravure etching prints from their photographs. This environmentally friendly process translates photographic detail into ink on paper with unparalleled beauty. \nNo prior experience with printmaking is required. All necessary aspects of printmaking will be discussed including choosing inks\, papers\, and wiping material. Wiping and inking techniques will be covered. Be prepared to marvel at the way your photograph is transformed through ink on paper. \nThe making of digital positives will be discussed\, but for the workshop itself\, you will send color or black and white image files (300 dpi at 10” on the long side) to be made into a digital positive prior to the workshop. An email with details will be provided once you are registered. Please submit a WORKSHOP SIGN UP FORM located below so we are able to contact you! \nHere is a brief outline of the process that will be presented in this workshop: \n\nStarting with your digital photograph\, a 5 x 7 transparency positive will be made\nThe positive is then laid on top of the light sensitive polymer plate and exposed to UV light\nWashing the plate in water etches the image onto the plate\nOnce hardened\, the plate is hand inked using water-soluble intaglio inks\nThe inked plate is then run through an etching press onto dampened paper\n\nRemnants #202\, Karen Hymer \nAbout Karen Hymer\nKaren Hymer is an artist and educator based out of Silver City\, New Mexico. For the past seven years she has ventured into the world of printmaking – exploring imagery in the form of photopolymer gravures. Her current work explores the effects of time on the human body and various plant life. Hymer’s richly detailed photogravures emphasize the interplay of texture\, pattern\, light and shadow in muted earth tones. The decontextualized close-ups of the body and decaying plants reveal a poetic beauty in these often over-looked subjects. \nWatch The Beauty of Ink on Paper: Photopolymer Gravure printing from Karen Hymer to get a preview of Karen’s process! \nPhoto by CL Burns \nPhoto by CL Burns \n
