SUMMARY:Take / Aim
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in human history\, more people live in urban environments than rural\, yet we continue to insist that we are the guardians and stewards of the land. Contemporary society relies on photography now more than ever to experience the wild and the natural. A confrontational topic\, such as hunting\, immediately becomes approachable and obtainable. This exhibition focuses on the complex and bizarre narratives encompassed within hunting culture. The opposition and objectification of nature simultaneously mirrors our fragile and romantic communion with environments and the various species of animals they contain. The photographers selected for this exhibition\, illustrate raw opinions as diverse in range as the attitudes and beliefs shared between hunters. Whether the artists themselves are active participants or captivated observers\, their images depict a correlation between destruction\, survival\, tradition\, and sport.\nOnce a common subject within art\, hunting has changed over time much like its creative portrayal. Whether it is a prehistoric drawing on cave wall\, a 16th or 17th century painting\, or a contemporary photograph\, the “hunt” has historically embodied the idea of predator versus prey. The continual changes however reference its social interpretation and acceptance. The most basic perception concerns the continuity of life through the generation of food\, a traditional view of hunting to survive. Be that as it may\, it has at certain points in time\, been culturally accepted as a sign of dominance\, displaying man’s compulsive desire to control nature. Yet today\, though commonly argued\, it pertains instead to some people’s sense of identity\, family recreation\, and a desire for a physical and psychological connection to land. Our assimilation into the intimate and unforgiving wild\, allows for a curious and beautiful affiliation\, and while our relationship to nature is not always understood\, we admire its honesty. It’s delicate and frightening\, peaceful yet violent. Hunting expresses both an opposition to and an integration with nature all at the same time. A true line in the sand\, where one can stand on either side\, but also a line so easily blurred with a swift kick.\n \nTake / Aim is an exhibition curated by William LeGoullon and presented in collaboration with Northlight Gallery and the Phoenix Institute of Contemporary Art. \nExhibiting Artists:\nAndrea Tese\nBrian Lesteberg\nBrooks Dierdorff\nDave Imms\nErika Larsen\nJason Vaughn\nJesse Burke\nJoe Mannino\nJordan Baumgarten\nMichael Tummings \nArtist Lectures:\nDuring the opening reception on October 21st at 6:30pm\, Jesse Burke will give an artist lecture. Most recently known for his latest book “Wild and Precious” (Published by Daylight Books)\, Jesse will be sharing insights about his work from his “Blind” series and thoughts about image creation\, family\, and the relationships we share with nature. \nDuring the closing reception on December 2nd at 6:30pm there will be an artist lecture by Brooks Dierdorff\, a photographic artist whose work expands beyond the printed image\, encapsulating elements of sculpture\, video\, and performance.

SUMMARY:Tintype Portraits by David Emitt Adams
DESCRIPTION:Internationally known artist David Emitt Adams\, will make your tintype portrait during this special portrait session event at Art Intersection. You can sit for a unique\, handcrafted portrait made using the historic tintype process originally invented in the 1850s. \nA session lasts between 30 – 45 minutes and you take away a fresh tintype portrait that will make a perfect keepsake or gift. The tintype image is captured on a 4-inch by 5-inch aluminum plate. Please allow an additional 30-minutes after your session for the plate to dry\, or you can pick it up the next business day. \nThe session price includes only one tintype and does not include retakes unless there are clear issues with the image. Retakes are done at the discretion of the photographer. We can easily photograph 1 – 2 people and may be able to add a third person maximum. The exposure time may be as long as 5-seconds\, so the subjects must be able to hold a pose\, without moving for the exposure duration. Sorry\, no pets. \nSince tintypes are unique and cannot be reproduced\, if you want two tintype portraits from the same session\, another plate may be purchased for an additional $45. We will make a high resolution scan of your portrait for $25 and email it to you. You can pay for these options when you arrive for your scheduled session\, but if you would like an additional plate made we must know at the time of scheduling. \n \n \nDavid uses a large format camera in the Art Intersection studio to photograph tintype portraits directly onto the aluminum plate. The image is developed in the darkroom and then coated with a varnish finish immediately after the photograph is taken. \n \n

SUMMARY:Walk and Talk with the Artists of (re)View
DESCRIPTION:As part of the (re)View: Abstract\, Land\, and the Narrative exhibition\, Art Intersection is pleased to present a Walk and Talk with artists Philip V. Augustin\, B.K. Skaggs\, and Melanie Walker. Please join us in the Art Intersection galleries from 4 – 5pm on Saturday\, November 12 to hear from the artists about their pieces in the exhibition and their creative processes. \n$10 event fee includes hors d’oeuvres and one glass of wine. The (re)View and Imprint Artists’ Reception and Holiday Sale will follow the Walk and Talk from 5 – 7pm. \n(re)View: Abstract\, Land\, and the Narrative\nIn (re)View\, we take a more in-depth look at three significant darkroom-focused artists featured earlier in the year during the Light Sensitive exhibition. These artists’ works explore abstract formalism\, intimate landscapes and creative narrative. Each uses mediums of traditional or historical photographic processes in an exceptional way to express their diverse visions. \n\nPhilip V. Augustin\, B.K. Skaggs\, Melanie Walker \nPhilip V. Augustin\nMy creative inclination is to simplify the world into minimal formalist compositions. For forty years I have developed a mastery of photographic technique and vision that allows me to create simple images presented in an elegant manner. This simplification has evolved into abstraction. My current work uses abstraction to question the boundaries of the photographic process. \nAbstractions (2006-2013) is a loose group of photographs that never came together as a cohesive body of work. They represent my first serious attempt to gain an understanding of how abstract imagery works. In 2007 my creative practice was in a state of flux\, I was questioning long-held assumptions and exploring fertile new ground. By 2013 I had radically transformed my photography. What I learned creating these images was crucial to my change from representational landscape work to nonrepresentational work. \nThese images draw on spontaneous reactions to visual opportunities before me\, moments so common and familiar they are often overlooked; the play of light across an object\, graphic elements of a larger scene\, shadows interacting with reality. The graphic sensibility and formalist compositions directly connect with my longstanding creative sensibility. \nThrough selective composition I worked to flatten visual space. By only providing minimal contextual information the work is intended to perplex the viewer\, causing doubt about what they are seeing\, challenging them to fill in their own narrative of the image. By paring down the contents of the photograph\, and my visual vocabulary\, the work began to speak to a more generic nature of spaces. Ultimately these experiments with abstraction convinced me that\, even with their context removed\, the specificity of the objects interfered with the pure abstract forms I was seeking. \nB.K. Skaggs\nMy first roll of film\, shot in South Dakota in the summer of ’77\, is now but a memory\, fire made sure of that; those images have gone deep into the grey\, not yet accessed by dreams. I remember though the thrill of anticipation; anticipation of something known yet unknown\, and that sensation still accompanies every photographic endeavor taken. \nLagniappe: an unexpected gift. \nThis is how I view what I’ve seen\, what I’ve photographed\, and what is here upon the walls. From the searches through the contact sheets for potentials\, failed and realized\, on through to the sifting and sorting of edits\, we come to this: an offer for the viewer to have a glimpse into my quiet adventures\, undertaken along back roads\, hiking ancient trails\, seeking the arcane within Arizona. \nMelanie Walker\nUsing the image of a house and the conceptual framework of home as metaphor\, I create images that explore the notions of memory\, family\, dreams and fiction. I seek to offer pictorial access to the often inexplicable longing for connection. Delving into the fantastic and the banal\, the work addresses fictional metaphors for experience and emotion. Within this body of work I seek to create a theater where the ridiculous\, the poignant and the unexpected can be acted out through imaginary and whimsical pictorial associations that portray life on the lyrical and playful edge of sense and non-sense.
