SUMMARY:Frida Kahlo - Her Photos
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Frida Kahlo Museum – Casa Azul/Diego Rivera Museum; Banco de Mexico Fiduciario en el Fideicomiso Museos Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo \nThe Heard Museum presents a selection of more than 240 images from the 6\,500 which are part of the Blue House archive. The photographs\, along with Frida Kahlo’s personal items\, were locked in a room of the Blue House\, the residence where she spent most of her life\, and revealed to the public in 2007. The images have served as memories to Frida\, as work tools or as a means to exorcise solitude. The exhibition Frida Kahlo—Her Photos\, curated by the well-known Mexican photographer and photography historian Pablo Ortiz Monasterio\, shows the importance of this medium in Frida’s life. \nThe photographs – taken by Man Ray\, Martin Munkácsi\, Tina Modotti\, Edward Weston\, Nickolas Muray\, Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo and others – were cherished by Kahlo when she was immobilized and isolated in her bed. \nFrida Kahlo had a very special relationship with photography. Besides her personal background – both her father\, Guillermo Kahlo\, and her maternal grandfather were professional photographers – she brought different uses to photography: she collected daguerreotypes and visiting cards (carte de visite in French or tarjeta de visita in the original) from the 19th century\, she kept photographs upon which she put her personal stamp\, cutting things out from them\, writing dedications on them and personalizing them as if they were paintings. Some of the images have red lipstick kisses\, others are trimmed or folded. Some have personal notations on the reverse. \nThese images give visitors an intimate view of Kahlo’s life. The exhibition does not intend to depict a chronological biography\, but rather to exhibit parts of the personal history of an artist\, of a country and of a period. It is a photographic collage made up of images that allow us to discover new facets of a key figure of the 20th century. \nFor Frida Kahlo—Her Photos 241 photographs have been chosen\, organized into six main subjects: The Origins; The Blue House; Politics\, Revolutions and Diego; Her Broken Body; Frida’s Loves and Photography. The images throw new light on Frida Kahlo’s work as an artist\, a way of understanding her life in historical and cultural context\, and a demonstration of her passion for Mexico. \nMuseum admission is free on First Fridays and during the opening reception. Otherwise\, admission is $18 for adults\, $13.50 for seniors\, $7.50 for students and children over 7 years old\, and free for children under 5\, American Indians\, and museum members.

DESCRIPTION:The North and South Galleries at Art Intersection will feature a solo show of fine art photography and premier of a new book from The City project by William W. Fuller.  For over 35 years Fuller explored cities\, photographing their architectural form and beauty with his black and white film\, and large-format camera. \nFrom the introduction to Fuller’s book\, The City\, Dr. Rebecca Senf\, curator of the Norton Photography Gallery at the Phoenix Art Museum\, wrote; “For over forty years\, Fuller has visited cities throughout the United States\, making pictures that heighten the abstract qualities of the urban structures he encounters.  His compositions emphasize formal qualities – light and shade\, shape and negative space\, line and pattern – by collapsing layers of buildings and sky into flat arrangements.  This modernist approach to making pictures\, one which privileges the visual qualities of the resulting photograph over the literal or symbolic meaning of the subject\, is one Fuller has pursued consistently and with lifelong dedication.” \nThe exhibition will be on view from January 19 – February 27\, 2016 and will feature an opening reception on Saturday\, January 16 from 6 – 8pm. \nThis exhibition and book signing are part of PhotoTapas\, celebrating February as the Arizona month of photography. \nSan Francisco\, California\, 1987\, William Fuller \n Los Angeles\, California\, 1986\, William W. SUMMARY:Working the Land: Arizona Farming and Ranching Families
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Working the Land: Arizona Farming and Ranching Families features four local Arizona artists: Scott T. Baxter\, Gina DeGideo\, Jay Dusard\, and Jill Ison\, making contemporary photographic work of farming and ranching families and individuals\, still working in Arizona. \nWhether it is through the viewpoint of their own family’s lives\, documenting others\, or from conversations with historical photographs\, each artist has worked closely for years with the people in the photographs to show a dynamic look at their lives\, rarely seen by the common passerby \nThe exhibition will be held at Cattle Track Art Gallery and will be part of PhotoTapas – February photography month in Arizona. SUMMARY:Everything is Connected
DESCRIPTION:Everything is Connected\, the ASU Student Photographers Association Annual Members Exhibition\, was juried by Arizona State University alumna Carol Panaro-Smith. She has been an arts educator and administrator in the Phoenix area for over 30 years. Her bio states that her area of specialization is alternative photographic processes\, mixed media\, and book arts\, but truly it is in mentoring others and guiding them to a deeper expression of their creative practice. Carol Panaro-Smith is a teacher in the most soul-inspiring sense of the word. \nEach fall ASU SPA selects a photographer or curator to jury the annual members show and present a public lecture about their work. The exhibition is then hosted in the spring by Northlight Gallery before the club’s annual fundraiser. The ASU SPA Silent Auction held in April funds the juror’s lecture and other club events during the academic year. \nLast fall Panaro-Smith juried the exhibition and then met with students for individual portfolio reviews. As part of the review process she then selected small suites of images by each student to be featured in the exhibition\, Everything is Connected. This one-on-one critique is an invaluable experience for the students who are preparing for graduation and the review circuit of the professional artist. \nNorthlight Gallery at Grant Street Studios in downtown Phoenix will host Everything is Connected January 22 – February 6. The gallery is open noon to 5:00 on Thursday – Saturday\, and on First & Third Fridays from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Free parking is available on the west side of the building. \nJoin the student photographers\, faculty and staff for the closing reception on First Friday\, February 5 from 6–9 p.m. The featured student photographers will offer brief gallery talks about their work starting at 6:30 p.m. \nThis exhibition is part of PhotoTapas\, celebrating February as Arizona’s month of photography.

SUMMARY:Everything Echoes
DESCRIPTION:Tilt Gallery presents Everything Echoes\, with work from Little Rituals and Extrapolations\, two bodies of work by Jenny Lynn. The artist will be present for conversation and signing of her recent publication\, Eyebook\, on February 18 from 7 – 9pm\, coinciding with Scottsdale’s ArtWalk. \nJenny Lynn is an accomplished photo-based artist\, whose work has been widely exhibited\, collected\, and published. \nHer unique and varied work ranges from conceptual photographs\, to photograms\, collages\, and sculptural/ functional pieces. Best described as a “media mix\,” her artwork has been featured in Photo District News\, The NewYorker\, and ZOOM International magazines\, as well as on book covers\, for such publishers as Random House and Simon and Schuster.  Ms. Lynn is also well known for the widely-seen magazine advertisement ABSOLUT LYNN. (commissioned for the “Absolut Artists” series). \nMs. Lynn has also created a number of signature art objects\, such as her Eyewatch wristwatch\, Box of Blue\, and PhotoTotems. Her largest project to date is Dreams in Transit\, a 10-foot by 30-foot public art piece commissioned by New Jersey Transit\, permanently installed at the 9th Street Station in Hoboken\, New Jersey. \nJenny Lynn’s artwork is represented in many private and public collections\, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Center for Creative Photography\, and the Norton Museum of Art.  Ms. Lynn exhibits regularly at galleries and museums\, and her work was recently featured in her solo exhibition\, The Object is Art\, at the Katonah Museum of Art in New York. \nShe has taught and lectured at colleges\, universities\, and professional organizations throughout the country. Her retrospective monograph\, PhotoPlay\, features numerous examples of her inventive works. \nJenny Lynn was born in Tampa\, Florida\, and raised outside Philadelphia. After studying painting and photography at the Tyler School of Art\, she briefly pursued filmmaking at the New York University Graduate School of Film and Television. Returning to photography\, Ms. Lynn established herself as a freelance photographer and designer in New York City\, and later lived in Santa Barbara\, California\, before moving to Philadelphia\, where she currently resides and works. \nINFOCUS members are invited to a private viewing and preview reception with Jenny Lynn at Tilt Gallery on Thursday\, February 18 from 6:30 – 7pm. Prior to the gallery opening for downtown Scottsdale’s regular Thursday night Art Walk\, INFOCUS members will have the opportunity to preview Lynn’s two bodies of work\, “Little Rituals” and “Extrapolations.” The artist will be present to discuss her work and answer questions. \nThis event is free\, but limited to INFOCUS members only. SUMMARY:Flowers\, Fruit\, Books\, Bones
DESCRIPTION:What is still life? Although at its most basic\, still life is an assemblage of inanimate objects\, historically the term refers to artworks that engage with concepts of achievement\, ephemerality\, and mortality. They rely on symbolic objects to suggest impermanence: flowers\, fruit\, books\, bones. The English term “still life” contrasts with the French term for the same genre\, nature morte\, literally “dead nature.” \nUnlike paintings\, which are primarily intended as artworks\, a still life photograph may originally have been made for another purpose. In “Flowers\, Fruits\, Books\, Bones: Still Life from the Center for Creative Photography\,” the exhibition features photographs initially made as descriptive documents intended for a range of uses\, from advertisements to teaching aids. Regardless of intention\, the exhibition explores how photographers use the characteristics of the medium such as focus\, abrupt framing\, and detailed description to extract\, isolate\, and describe their subjects. They direct our attention to shapes\, textures\, details\, edges\, colors\, negative spaces\, shadows\, and unexpected angles. \n \nA more common genre in paintings\, the exhibition includes paintings from Phoenix Art Museum’s collection\, inviting viewers to examine the ways photographers have approached the still life genre as compared to their painter counterparts. \nEach of the works invite the viewer to slow down\, to leave our normal lives behind\, if only for a moment\, and lavish our attention on each of these unique objects. SUMMARY:Call for Work - Emerge 2016\, Student Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Art Intersection invites photographers enrolled in an Arizona high school (including home school students)\, community college\, art school\, or university to submit work for consideration in Emerge\, an Arizona student photography juried exhibition.  This year’s submissions to Emerge will be juried by photographer William LeGoullon. \nAs part of our mission to support emerging artists\, we offer student artists an opportunity to show their work in the North and South Galleries at Art Intersection. Art Intersection staff will also select recipients for Best of High School\, Best of Post-High School\, and Best of Show. \nAbout the Juror \nWilliam LeGoullon is an artist raised and currently based in Phoenix\, Arizona. Since receiving his BFA from Arizona State University in 2009\, he has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally including exhibitions in Los Angeles\, Philadelphia\, San Francisco\, Fort Collins\, Santa Barbara\, Seattle and Belgrade Serbia. In 2011\, LeGoullon was awarded a Contemporary Forum Emerging Artist Grant from The Phoenix Art Museum and exhibited in The Arizona Biennial at The Tucson Museum of Art. \nMore recently he was recognized as a Klompching Gallery FRESH 2015 Finalist and took part in this years Photo Tapas by showcasing a solo exhibition at Modified Arts Gallery. In addition to exhibiting his own works\, LeGoullon also explores independent curatorial work and teaches at Phoenix College.
