SUMMARY:Contemporary Mexican Photography: Existe lo que tiene nombre'
DESCRIPTION:With more than 50 photographic and video works produced within the past decade\, Existe lo que tiene nombre is the U.S. debut for many of the exhibiting artists. Ranging from humorous to disturbing\, personal to ambiguous\, the work of the 23 artists featured in this exhibition characterizes contemporary photography in Mexico. This exhibition is curated by Sergio De La Torre (San Francisco) and Javier Ramírez Limón (Tijuana) and is supported by the University of San Francisco\, The San Francisco Arts Commission and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The ASU Art Museum presentation of the exhibition is managed by Julio Cesar Morales and is supported by the Helme Prinzen Endowment.\n  \nABOUT SERGIO DE LA TORRE \nSergio De La Torre is a photographer and performance/installation artist\, who grew up in the Tijuana/San Diego area and migrated to San Francisco. His works have focused on issues regarding diaspora\, tourism\, immigration\, and identity politics. He is an assistant professor in the Art + Architecture department at the University of San Francisco. De La Torre’s work often invokes collaborations with the subjects and invites both intimate and critical reflections on topics related to housing\, immigration and labor. These works have appeared in the 10th International Istanbul Biennial\, Turkey; the Bienal Barro de America\, The 2nd Johannesburg Biennial; in the Cleveland Performance Art Festival\, Cleveland\, Ohio; the Atelier Frankfurt\, Germany; the Centro Cultural Tijuana; the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco; the TRIBECA Film Festival\, New York; and el Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia. In 2001\, he and filmmaker Vicky Funari collaborated to create the documentary film Maquilapolis [city of factories]\, which explores stories of workers in Tijuana’s maquiladoras-factories. \n  \nPablo López Luz\, “Vista aérea de la Ciudad de México\, I\,” 2013. SUMMARY:Frida Kahlo - Her Photos
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Frida Kahlo Museum – Casa Azul/Diego Rivera Museum; Banco de Mexico Fiduciario en el Fideicomiso Museos Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo \nThe Heard Museum presents a selection of more than 240 images from the 6\,500 which are part of the Blue House archive. The photographs\, along with Frida Kahlo’s personal items\, were locked in a room of the Blue House\, the residence where she spent most of her life\, and revealed to the public in 2007. The images have served as memories to Frida\, as work tools or as a means to exorcise solitude. The exhibition Frida Kahlo—Her Photos\, curated by the well-known Mexican photographer and photography historian Pablo Ortiz Monasterio\, shows the importance of this medium in Frida’s life. \nThe photographs – taken by Man Ray\, Martin Munkácsi\, Tina Modotti\, Edward Weston\, Nickolas Muray\, Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo and others – were cherished by Kahlo when she was immobilized and isolated in her bed. \nFrida Kahlo had a very special relationship with photography. Besides her personal background – both her father\, Guillermo Kahlo\, and her maternal grandfather were professional photographers – she brought different uses to photography: she collected daguerreotypes and visiting cards (carte de visite in French or tarjeta de visita in the original) from the 19th century\, she kept photographs upon which she put her personal stamp\, cutting things out from them\, writing dedications on them and personalizing them as if they were paintings. Some of the images have red lipstick kisses\, others are trimmed or folded. Some have personal notations on the reverse. \nThese images give visitors an intimate view of Kahlo’s life. The exhibition does not intend to depict a chronological biography\, but rather to exhibit parts of the personal history of an artist\, of a country and of a period. It is a photographic collage made up of images that allow us to discover new facets of a key figure of the 20th century. \nFor Frida Kahlo—Her Photos 241 photographs have been chosen\, organized into six main subjects: The Origins; The Blue House; Politics\, Revolutions and Diego; Her Broken Body; Frida’s Loves and Photography. The images throw new light on Frida Kahlo’s work as an artist\, a way of understanding her life in historical and cultural context\, and a demonstration of her passion for Mexico. \nMuseum admission is free on First Fridays and during the opening reception. Otherwise\, admission is $18 for adults\, $13.50 for seniors\, $7.50 for students and children over 7 years old\, and free for children under 5\, American Indians\, and museum members.

SUMMARY:(re)View: Explorations in Human Nature
DESCRIPTION:In the exhibition (re)View\, we take an extended look at work from four exceptional artists who exhibited work earlier this year in our annual Light Sensitive exhibition of hand-made darkroom works\, juried by Robert Hirsch. Artists: Jonah Calinawan\, Karen Hymer\, Amy Rockett-Todd (Director’s Choice)\, and Rebecca Sexton Larson were selected by the Art Intersection curatorial staff and invited to exhibit additional pieces from the bodies of work they showed in Light Sensitive. \nAll four artists are making work that relates to the natural world with the clear influence of man. Although each uses different light sensitive processes\, their subjects and scenes tie nicely to one another with a quality of surrealism and mystery. Join us for a Walk and Talk with the Artists on Saturday\, January 9\, as well as a Closing Reception in the South Gallery at Art Intersection. \nRising\, Jonah Calinawan \nGrate\, Amy Rockett-Todd \nRemnants 4\, Karen Hymer \nOcean of Baseness\, Rebecca Sexton Larson

SUMMARY:Photography Re-Imagined V: The Artist's Hand
DESCRIPTION:Tilt gallery’s 5th annual “Photography Re-Imagined: the Artist’s Hand” juried show of one-of-a-kind mixed media photographic imagery features 33 art pieces\, which have been selected by the prominent photographer\, Holly Roberts\, out of 385 entries. \nAbout the Juror: Holly Roberts’ first national exposure came in 1989 with the publication of the monograph\, Holly Roberts\, from the Untitled Series published by the Friends of Photography. Although her work has always been based on the photograph\, it is the inclusion of paint that makes it distinct. Her recent works develop a narrative scene with collaged photographic elements\, making use of familiar or iconic stories to address tougher questions about man’s effect on the land and the animals that inhabit it. In 1990\, Nazraeli Press published Holly Roberts: Works 1989-1999\, and in 2009\, Holly Roberts: Works 2000-2009. Her work is held by more than 30 museums and universities. A dedicated teacher as well as a prolific artist\, she has had a profound effect on a community of artists around the country. She lives in the Southwest. \n \n  \n
