SUMMARY:Creatures of Light and Darkness - Kate Breaky
DESCRIPTION:We hear them at night in the desert. The creatures we live with but rarely encounter—out there in the moonlight—grunting\, howling\, singing\, growling. We set up a small camera—motion sensing\, infrared\, barely visible—to secretly watch as they come and go in the darkness\, or on their way home at dawn. \n– Kate Breakey \nPhotographer Kate Breakey says she delights in the images she captures with her small camera of the Sonoran Desert’s lively night traffic. She says she is continually astonished to see the wild animals going about their wanderings and lives. It is this passionate anticipation and amazement that Breakey brings to her life size and larger images of the desert’s heartbeat—the coyotes\, jackrabbits\, foxes\, owls and javelina—in her new series of hand-colored photographs\, Creatures of Light and Darkness.

SUMMARY:Bill Timmerman
DESCRIPTION:While outside this morning I noticed a bright crescent moon in the southeast sky. Even though most of us do not have extensive knowledge of this beautiful object\, we never question what it is. \nTake a moment to imagine an early culture that did not know what the moon actually was. No matter how carefully they observed this luminous object changing shape as it drifted through the night sky\, they did not have the context to understand it the way we understand it. This of course did not prevent early cultures from giving meaning to it. They too thought they knew it. \nToday\, each of us has access to a collective body of information we generally feel precludes our ignorance of the world. To some degree this is true. Our collective knowledge\, though a work in progress\, is immense. But every culture that preceded ours most likely felt the same way. At each point in history the prevailing culture of a given region thought themselves to be the forefront of knowledge. \nPast or present\, knowledge has lent a sense of security and purpose to the human experience. Yet when you think about it\, each of us exists in a world that is essentially unknown to us. For the most part we know only what we need to know. The question becomes; does the value of focusing on essentials\, outweigh the potential of pushing into darkness? \nThe photography work I do is an attempt to stir the unknown up to a level of awareness. But if the unknown is without reference how can you access it? The more familiar one gets with any method or process the more they sense it’s hidden potential. Initially one gathers only sense impressions. Eventually\, sense impressions network their way into coherent thought or understanding. Learning about the world is really a matter of persistence\, and the innate desire for efficiency. An example would be the persistence required to learn to read or write. \nThe process of working with the still camera is no different. The more familiar one becomes with it the more flexible and reasonable it’s perspectives become. By portioning the world in the view finder one mostly re-enforces the world they already know\, but on rare occasions the view will yield something of which they were previously unaware. When this happens\, the presence of that unknown should be apparent in the photograph.

SUMMARY:Light Sensitive 2013 - Celebrating Images from the Darkroom
DESCRIPTION:A Juried Exhibition Celebrating Images from the Darkroom\nArt Intersection presents Light Sensitive\, a national juried exhibition of analog photography. This annual exhibition celebrates the traditional methods of making images in the darkroom. Past work has included c-prints\, platinum\, cyanotype\, gelatin silver\, gum bichromate\, wet plate collodion tintypes\, and other printing processes. While the final print must be made using analog techniques the use of computer generated digital negatives/positives in the creation of the print is acceptable. \nTwo or three artists will be selected from the exhibition as best in show for an additional exhibition sometime in 2013-2014. \nAbout the Juror \nKatherine Ware is Curator of Photography at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe\, where she recently organized the exhibition\, book\, and website Earth Now: American Photographers and the Environment. She previously served as Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Assistant Curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. \nShe is a frequent juror and reviewer of contemporary photography and has written essays on the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ms. Ware is particularly interested in work that pushes the boundaries of photography. \nLook here to see the Images from Light Sensitive 2012.

SUMMARY:Coming\, Going and Staying - Lara Shipley Master of Fine Arts Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lara Shipley Master of Fine Arts Exhibition \n \nFor the past three years Lara Shipley has been traveling to the borderlands of Southern Arizona\, making photographs with a focus of people who’ve made a home in this isolated region and those who are just passing through. Coming\, Going and Staying weaves portraits and landscapes together that are a mixture of staged and found scenes. The result is a place that blends a fictional suggested narrative with actual experiences of this unique region\, just north of the border. \n
