The Bike-tography Show – Martha Retallick

A solo exhibition of images by Martha Retallick, combining bicycling with photography.

Meet Martha Retallick. She’s short of stature, slight of build, and doesn’t have an athletic bone in her body.

But this tiny Tucsonan has done something that few people ever have. She has bicycled in every one of the United States. Accomplishing this goal only took 12 years – and 15,000 miles.

Along the way, Retallick got kicked out of Jimmy Carter’s place in Georgia, spent a night in an Arkansas jail, and was treated to a private concert by a Texan who penned a chart-topping song while he was still a teenager.

Retallick shot hundreds of photos while she was out on the road. Her favorites reflect an approach that she calls bike-tography. That’s the art of combining bicycling with photography.

While she was pedaling around America, Martha only had room for one camera body and one lens. So, that’s what she worked with.

And she still does.

That’s because Retallick has never owned a car. She’ll be sharing images from her car-free photographic career during the Bike-tography Show. The show is part of Borderlands Brewing Company’s ongoing Borderlands Arts series.

Grand Opening Celebration: Saturday, October 12, 4-9 p.m. at Borderlands Brewing Company. Featuring a 4:30 pm appearance by Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, storytelling by Martha Retallick, live music by The Long Wait, locally brewed beers and ales, and food trucks.

Exhibition Hours: Borderlands Brewing Company is open 4-9 p.m Wednesday through Saturday. Closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Exhibition Framing and Installation: Borealis Arts

Online Portfolio: A fully illustrated online portfolio (PDF file), featuring a biographical essay and artist’s statement by Retallick, is available now. It can also be purchased as a softcover or hardcover book.
