SUMMARY:Paths to Publishing
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\nPaths to Publishing will explore the many routes available to the photographer today who wishes to see their work in book form. Discussion will include what it takes to move work from an idea to a finished book\, obstacles\, time frames\, and lessons learned. Paths covered will include publication through commercial or university presses\, zines\, and hand-made books. \nThis event takes place on First Friday\, is free and open to the public\, and will be held in Singer Hall at the Phoenix Art Museum. Due to multiple events taking place that evening\, arrive early to locate parking\, or car pool\, or ride the Light Rail-the museum is located near the Central and McDowell stop. \nMichael Lundgren \nMichael Lundgren received his BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology and his MFA in studio art from Arizona State University. Michael collaborated with artist Mark Klett\, environmental historian Philip L. Fradkin\, and author Rebecca Solnit on the book and exhibition\, After the Ruins\, 1906 and 2006\, Rephotographing the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire (2006). His work is included in museum collections and has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the U.S.\, the U.K.\, Denmark\, Japan\, and France. His latest book from Radius Books is titled\, Matter. \nClare Benson \nClare Benson is a photographer and interdisciplinary artist from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Her work\, which explores themes of family history\, science\, and mythology\, has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She received her MFA from University of Arizona and her BFA from Central Michigan University. In 2014-15\, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to pursue research in Arctic Scandinavia\, based at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics. Benson currently serves as Visiting Artist/Faculty in Photography at Arizona State University. Her book\, The Shepherd’s Daughter\, received the Critical Mass Book Award through Photolucida. \nMichael Max McLeod \nBefore studying photography\, Michael Max McLeod worked as a designer for RollingStone.com and a producer for Playboy.com. At Playboy\, McLeod produced live coverage of Hugh Hefner’s events at the Playboy Mansion. In 2013\, McLeod was awarded a Phoenix Art Museum Contemporary Forum Emerging Artist Grant. His work has been exhibited at The Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles\, The Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and The Tokyo Institute of Photography. A portfolio from Adult Cinema is in the permanent collection of the Kinsey Intitute for Research in Sex\, Gender and Reproduction. McLeod releases publications under the DIY imprint Goodbye Ranch. His work has also been published in Unlocked\, 10×10 American Photobooks\, and Queer Zines Vol. 2. \nJace Graf \nJace Graf owns and operates Cloverleaf Studio\, a book arts business located in Austin\, Texas. He worked for five years at BookLab\, which at that time was the premier edition bookbindery in the country. In 1996\, Jace started Cloverleaf Studio\, where he specializes in hand bookbinding\, box making\, and book design. His work is held in many private collections\, library special collections\, and museums across the country. In the past 20 years\, Jace has worked with hundreds of commercial and fine art photographers to create portfolios\, limited-edition books\, deluxe versions of trade editions\, and enclosures for suites of prints to be sold in galleries. Jace will conduct a two-day workshop\, “Introduction to Bookmaking for Photographers with Jace Graf” at Art Intersection\, March 4\, 2017\, 10:00am-5:00pm\, and March 5\, 2017\, 10:00am-3:00pm. \nRebecca Senf \nDr. Rebecca Senf is the Chief Curator at the Center for Creative Photography and the Norton Family Curator of Photography\, a joint appointment between the Center for Creative Photography and the Phoenix Art Museum. In October of 2012 her book Reconstructing the View: The Grand Canyon Photographs of Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe was released by University of California Press. She contributed “The Elusive Event: An Interview between Frank Gohlke and Rebecca Senf”\, to an upcoming volume\, entitled Before-and-After Photography: Histories and Contexts edited by Jordan Bear and Kate Palmer Albers\, due out in May 2017\, from Bloomsbury Press. \n
