SUMMARY:Emerge Student Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Emerge showcases the breadth of talent exhibited by Arizona’s student photographers from high school freshmen to senior citizens. We welcome photographers enrolled in an Arizona high school (including home school students)\, community college\, art school\, or university.  This year’s submissions to Emerge will be juried by Kari Wehrs. \nAs part of our mission to support emerging artists\, we offer student artists an opportunity to show their work in the North and South Galleries at Art Intersection. Art Intersection staff will also select recipients for Best of High School\, Best of Post-High School\, and Best of Show. \nPictured work above by Paige Broman\, Mary Celaya\, and Camryn Watt \n\nAbout the Juror\nKari Wehrs is a photographer and educator currently living in Tempe\, AZ.  She attended Arizona State University for her MFA in photography and graduated in the Spring of 2018. \nAs a child\, Kari spent hours flipping through her Grandmother’s family photo albums that dated from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s.  The photographs were compiled neatly\, often with handwritten notations\, which suggested to her that they were precious objects.  Wanting to see the details of each image\, Kari often examined the photographs with her Grandmother’s magnifying glass.  She found the idea that time could be recorded and “held” in photographs to be truly fascinating. \nOriginally from Minnesota\, Kari attended the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse for her undergraduate education\, and soon after attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland\, Maine\, in the fall of 2007.  Kari has been associated with the Maine Media Workshops + College in Rockport\, Maine\, since 2008\, and has been a workshops instructor since 2012. \nKari has a deep interest in the techniques\, technology\, and history of the photographic medium.  While embracing multiple methods in her own work\, her most recent series is portraiture employing the 1850s wet plate collodion process (tintypes). \n \n\nInterviews with the “Best of” photographers. \n \n\nBest of High School: Camryn Watt\, “yin & yang (self portrait)” \n \n\nBest of Post High School: Elizabeth Z. Pineda\, “Las Hellas de Mi Gente” \n \n\nBest in Show: K.J. Herb\, “Car Crash Rhetoric” \n \n\nEmerge Sponsors\nThank you to our generous sponsors who make our “Best of Emerge” awards possible! Our sponsor support of student photographers helps us share the unforgettable experience of participating in a professional exhibition\, a confidence boost that can vault an emerging photographer to their next level of success. \n \nBest in Show: $250 Gift Certificate to Tempe Camera\n Sponsored by Tempe Camera\nWe thank Tempe Camera for their sponsorship of the Best in Show prize. Tempe Camera is an important part of the Arizona photography community and they demonstrate their commitment to emerging photographers through their ongoing support of educational programs. \n \nBest of High School: $100 Cash Prize\nSponsored by Kelly and Dennis Collins\nKelly and Dennis Collins are local artists\, art patrons\, and Art Intersection members. \n“After quitting school at sixteen\, it wasn’t until I returned for my Bachelor of Fine Arts at forty-five that I realized how important the education I had missed was. I hope this small gift is the catalyst and encouragement for a young artist to pursue their education and passion for their art.” – Dennis Collins \n  \n \nBest of Post-High School: $100 Cash Prize\nSponsored by Charlene Stant Engel\nCharlene Stant Engel is a local artist\, art patron\, and Art Intersection member. \n“I look forward to the Emerge Show. Every year it is fresh and unexpected. It always makes me smile to see the work of so many intense and talented young artists. To them I say: Let nothing stop you. Keep making Art!” – Charlene Stant Engel \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n [Show as slideshow]
