Description

Based near Payson, Arizona, William W. Fuller has been photographing American cities with his large format camera for nearly forty years. In black and white, he compresses urban buildings into graphic and layered compositions. Having driving across the United States dozens of times, he has visited Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Miami, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Denver, Phoenix, Houston, and Atlanta to explore those city’s structures.

Although the cities are named, Fuller’s pictures are not portraits of these places, their landmark architecture, or their distinctive skylines, but rather are explorations of shape, line, form, negative space, light and shadow, in high contrast.  This modernist way of approaching the landscape results in a collection of photographs that are universally appealing in their clean, crisp and cool elegance.
